• I was hesitant. Another social network? Do I have time? I know I need to care as a brand manager for my company but how does it fit into my personal brand?

The answer is that a good social network doesn’t become “another” social network that we have to manage. If it is the real deal, it will be a natural extension of what we already do online which is  search, be entertained, and connect with individuals.

Pinterest is a graphical representation of my brain. It’s like my more nebulous thoughts that don’t fit into a FB status update are given a foundation through boards and a physical form through pins.

Who am I as a marketer? What type of SEO am I? It would take you an hour to read this blog to find out. Or you could spend five minutes on my Pinterest page.

  • I’ve been pouring through dozens of videos in the real estate industry for apartments, condos, homes etc. I’m working with some very smart folks to make sure we are producing the best videos for our communities. I work at a very demanding company and our expectations of our video is nothing short of spectacular.

This video for The Riverhouse in New York is my favorite. They made great use of music, product stills, feature call outs and models to set a compelling scene for the prospective customer. What do you think? Do you have any other videos I should be reviewing?

  • Is this Panera Bread sign here to make me feel good or to motivate employees to wash their hands? It fails either way. Nobody wants ‘disease control’ front and center in a food establishment. Think people.

How about changing the sign to ‘If everyone washes their hands, everyone has clean hands.’

  • The more data we have access to, the more discrepancies we seem to find. How can we wade through all of data and tracking tools to find meaningful insights in which we can be confident? Below is a video of my presentation on Resolving Data Controversies at this year’s AIM conference in California. Take a look and let me know what you think.

  • I recently spoke at NMHC Marketing and Technology conference in Dallas Texas. The panel focus was on mobile marketing including the state of mobile traffic (device, percent of visitors, search, video etc.) and QR codes. At the end, I spent some time doing a live demo of our Live Digital Tour that we are testing at a property in Philadelphia. Take a look and let me know what you think. The presentation and video are below.

Below is a condensed version of a Live Digital Tour. It doesn’t really do it justice. I captured the video using GoToMeeting while Skyping with the leasing consultant at the property. The best thing about the Live Digital Tour is the interactivity with the person on the other side. You can guide them by asking questions along the way.

  • Pink hip flags on Monday Night Football, save the tatas Facebook app and doing good coffee sleeve. We are 11 days into October and it has struck me this Breast Cancer Awareness month that marketers far and wide have aligned themselves with this cause. And why not? Many people know a special woman in their life with breast cancer. All around it makes sense. It would be interesting to know if research funds have grown in relation to the increase in ads.

  • So I’ve been working with the fine folks at Callsource and Viget Labs on this project for some time now. One of the biggest challenges was implementing it on a website with hundreds of different phone numbers.

    The question:
If someone comes to our website from Foursquare, how can we rewrite the phone number for every community to the respective phone number for that property?

I know people are moving through the website and I want to make sure I track phone leads no matter what property they choose.

    The answer:
A nifty installation of Callsource that leaves many of the parameters in their installation code out of the website and instead relies heavily on the incoming URL. This, in essence, creates a positive lookup for all phone numbers on a page. While it can slow down a search page that might have 140 phone numbers, they are the last thing to load so it shouldn’t affect the experience.

Below is a quick video that shows the end product.

  • I recently gave a presentation to the Production Club of Baltimore on QR codes and all the fun new things we can do with them. The days of sending someone to the home page of your website from a QR code is over.

  • Every targeted marketing campaign can be broken down into four categories. These categories and a quick description follow.

    1. Behaviorgraphics – Behavior such as past purchase or online search.

    2. Psychographics – Psychological makeup and lifestyles including attitudes, values and motivations.

    3. Demographics – Measureable population characteristics such as age, income and ethnicity.

    4. Geodemographics – Is based on demographic characteristics of consumers who reside within geographic clusters such as ZIP and neighborhoods.

The question I recently posed to a student body at Johns Hopkins University was, does your prefered method of communication say something about you? The survey asked a classroom of students to text, scan, check in or email to view the answer. They didn’t know that all roads led to the same destination – this page.

Do these general characteristics describe you?

    Demographics of QR Code Consumers:

    QR Code Users' Demographic Information

    Behaviorgraphics of Texters

Has texting become a way of life for you?

    Psychographics of Email

What does your email provider say about your mind set when it comes to new technology.

    Geodemographics of Foursquare users

If you are a mayor of one of these venues, or attended the 4th annual best martini in DC contest at the Beacon Bar, then you are a true Johns Hopkins DC Urbanite.
